Every winter we see the same pattern: colds circulating through schools, flu knocking people out for a week, and a general sense of being run down from November onwards. You can't avoid all of it, but you can tip the odds in your favour.
The basics matter more than people think. Washing your hands properly (soap, 20 seconds, between the fingers) is still the single most effective thing you can do. Staying hydrated, sleeping enough, and eating actual vegetables sounds boring, but it works.
If you're eligible for a free NHS flu jab — over 65, pregnant, or living with a long-term health condition — come and get it. We do walk-in flu vaccinations throughout the season. No appointment, no fuss. Even if you're not in an at-risk group, we offer paid flu jabs too.
And if you do get ill: come and talk to us before booking a GP appointment. For many common winter ailments — sore throats, sinusitis, earache — we can assess and treat you on the spot through Pharmacy First. It's quicker, and it frees up GP appointments for people who really need them.
